This checklist provides alphabetical lists of the species of fauna and flora included in Appendices I, II and III of CITES in order to help the CITES Management and Scientific Authorities, Customs officials, and all others involved in implementing and enforcing the Convention. This list provides not only the scientific names but also the common names in English, French and Spanish.

This publication commemmorates the 10th anniversary of GRID-Arendal, a non-profit foundation providing decision-makers and the public with high quality environmental information and supporting UNEP in expanding the use of such information for awareness-raising, policy-making and action. It includes three main sections: (1) Anniversary ceremonies, (2) Seminar on environment-related health issues focusing on the Arctic, and (3) Agreements signed.

Since the 1970s the Baltic Sea Region has been considered a model for its innovative solutions to environmental problems. Major geopolitical changes in the region in the late 80s and early 90s led to a comprehensive drainage area approach to environment and development issues. Such an approach is demonstrated by the development of the HELCOM Joint Comprehensive Environmental Action Programme (JCP), the Vision and Strategies Around the Baltic (VASAB) 2010, and the Agenda 21 for the Baltic Sea region (Baltic 21) emerged.

This feasibility report provides an assessment of the environmental information systems capacities and needs in Hungary and proposes actions necessary to improve access to environmental information for decision making and awareness. Included in its recommendations is an implementation proposal leading to an operational UNEP/GRID-compatible environmental information network in Hungary.

UNEP has, for more than a decade, been stimulating global partnerships, such as GRID, to facilitate the generation and exchange of environmental data and information. More recently, a partnership forged between the ESA and UNEP has created the bases for a global telecommunications network - the Mercure. UNEP, though its UNEPnet services provided by Mercure, provides reliable, accurate and up-to-date environmental information that stimulates improved environmental management. This report consists of two parts. The first part of the report presents keynote addresses delivered during the inauguration of the UNEPnet Programme and the UNEPnet/Mercure Station in Arendal Norway on September 3, 1997. The second part of the report features keynote papers from the executive seminar The Role of Information Technology in Environmental Awareness-raising, Policy-Making, Decision-Making, and Development Aid held on the occasion of the inauguration of the UNEPnet Programme and the UNEPnet/Mercure Station.

In 1994 UNEP/GRID and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) initiated a joint project on the use of Geographic Information System in agricultural research. Designed to support the CGIAR centres in developing the GIS capacities, the project aimed to promote the interaction and efficient transfer of GIS technology and the applications between the CG and UNEP centres and clients. One of the results of this project was the publication of this report.

This report presents the issues and recommendations discussed at the workshop UNEP and CGIAR Co-operation on Data, Capacity Building and Networking Needs for the Use of Geographic Information Systems in Agricultural Research held in Arendal, Norway during May 9-11, 1995. The workshop is one of the first major activities related to a Norwegian Government-funded project aimed at establishing long-term co-operative links between UNEP and CGIAR networks to compile, distribute, and maintain high quality natural resource and socio-economic datasets in agricultural research activities. Also included in the report are a list of the workshop participants and the workshop programme.

In 1994 UNEP, in co-operation with GRID-Arendal, initiated a program to support environmental assessment, reporting and data management capacities in countries with economies in transition in Central and Eastern Europe. This program was part of UNEP's global Environment and Natural Resources Networking (ENRIN) program, which is a direct follow-up of Chapter 40 of Agenda 21 (information for decision-makers) that stresses the general lack of capacities at national and international levels for collecting and assessing data, processing it into adequate environmental information and disseminating it among its users.

The report describes the current status and general needs of the environmental information network in Georgia. The aim of this report is to help set up continuous and accurate data collection systems and make use of geographic information systems, expert systems, models and a variety of other techniques for the assessment and analysis of data.

This report describes the current status of environmental information networks in Ukraine and the priority needs for their development and improvement. The report is based on research carried out between February and April 1995 and supported by UNEP/GRID-Arendal.

The report presents the results of the seminar Integrated Environmental Information Systems in Support of Decision-Making in Countries in Transition held in Moscow on May 29-30, 1995. The aim of the seminar was to facilitate understanding of the role and place of environmental information systems in the process of decision making in transition economies. More specifically, the report provides an assessment of the environmental information management capacities and needs in countries with economies in transition, describes the various international programmes and mechanisms for collection, assessment and harmonisation of data at national and regional levels, and highlights the various recommendations adopted during the seminar.

In March 23-24, 1995 government representatives from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as well as representatives from various international organizations participated in the workshop National Environmental Reporting Needs and Capabilities in the Baltic States: the Roles of Information Networks, Information Centres and GIS held in Jäneda, Estonia. The workshop was organized by GRID-Arendal in co-operation with the Estonian Environment Information Center as part of UNEP's Environment and Information Network (ENRIN) programme for countries with economies in transition in Central and Eastern Europe.

Recent economic and political changes in the Russian Federation have brought about a growing demand for environmental information to serve local, regional and national decision-making needs. In response to these needs two seminars were organized by the OECD's Centre for Co-operation with the Economies in Transition (CCET) and the UNEP to provide assistance to decision makers and experts in the Russian Federation who are responsible for designing of implementing integrated environmental information systems, and to share experience from OECD Member countries in establishing and operating such information systems.
