The "Carpathians Environment Outlook" (KEO) project was initiated in early 2004 by UNEP's Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA)/GRID-Geneva and the Regional Office for Europe (ROE). The KEO report is a sub-regional examination and synthesis of the environmental situation in the greater Carpathian region, that includes parts of seven countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia & Montenegro, the Slovak Republic and Ukraine). KEO is being carried out in a "bottom-up", collaborative and consultative style, similar to its parent products, UNEP's Global Environment Outlook (GEO) assessments at the global level.

The Tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004 affected a dozen Indian Ocean countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India and Maldives, Malaysia and Myanmar, with a death toll reportedly exceeding 250,000 and millions more left homeless. Survivors found shelter in temporary barraks and tents. Since then, there has been a pressing need to provide survivors with adequate permanent housing.

Environmental protection is one of the areas where the Balkan countries still face a big challenge to catch up with their western neighbours. After the 1990s conflicts and the breakup of Yugoslavia, six new Balkan states emerged. Apart from integrating environmental concerns into the new policies, a major challenge is environmental management across new borders. What used to be six international river basins in the Balkans have now evolved into 13 internationally shared river basins and four transboundary lake basins.

Beirut/Nairobi, 2 October 2006 - An international team of experts will begin an assessment of the environmental damage in Lebanon caused by the recent conflict.

This Manual attempts to link the two areas of MEA formulation and civil society participation. Its goal is to both strengthen multi-stakholder participation and increase political momentum for effective MEA development, implementation and enforcement.

The report is prepared by GRASP, the Great Ape Survival Partnership lead by UNEP and UNESCO in collaboration with a wide range of NGOs.

By and large, the UNEP scientific assessment report gives the Gaza pull-out an environmental clean bill of health.
