This report aims to analyze the projects implemented by the city of Beijing to incorporate environmental sustainability into the 2008 Olympic Games and fulfil the environmental commitments made during the candidature phase. Beijing set ambitious environmental goals to show the world its commitment to sustainable development. The project areas range from addressing air and water quality and waste management to including environmental considerations in new infrastructure development.

Climate change is the greatest challenge facing humanity at the start of the 21st Century. Failure to meet that challenge raises the spectre of unprecedented reversals in human development. This year’s Human Development Report explains why we have less than a decade to change course and start living within our global carbon budget. The Report explains how climate change will create long-run low human development traps, pushing vulnerable people into a downward spiral of deprivation. Because climate change is a global problem with global causes and effects, it demands a global response with countries acting on the basis of their historic responsibility and capabilities.

Transboundary waters connect populations of different countries. They are a major source of income for millions of people and create hydrological, social and economic interdependencies. This is the first ever in-depth report produced on Transboundary Rivers, lakes and ground-waters in the UNECE region. It aims to inform, guide and stimulate further action by Governments, river basin organizations, international organizations and relevant non-governmental organizations to improve the status of transboundary waters.

The Sudan Post Conflict Environmental Assessment provides an overview of environmental status and issues for Sudan and its territorial waters of the Red Sea.

This report confirms for the first time that depleted uranium (DU) from weapons used in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1994 and 1995 has contaminated local supplies of drinking water at one site, and can still be found in dust particles suspended in the air. The UNEP team who collated the information included representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

This document provides an introduction to the workshop topics, a report of these two workshops, and some resources for further information. It has been published with the kind support of US-EPA. Our goal with this publication is to bring the overall issues, and the specific discussions and outcomes of both workshops to a broader audience. We in UNEP hope that this publication, as well as our other activities, will help to raise awareness of life cycle approaches around the world and assist in their effective implementation.

The main objective of the TRM is to enable trainers, particularly, in developing countries and ClTs to develop and produce site and situation specific training courses for the different target groups who are concerned with EIA. The use of the TRM will contribute directly to the building of local capacity to develop EIA procedures and legislation, to conduct EIA, administer, monitor and evaluate the implementation of EIA. This manual presents training resource materials for one of the core elements of integrated environment and development decision-making - environmental impact assessment (EIA).

As evidence accumulates that we may already be witnessing the early signs of global climate change, the need to communicate this issue to both policymakers and the general public becomes ever more urgent.
