The new rapid response report entitled In Dead Water has for the first time mapped the multiple and combined impacts of pollution; alien infestations; over-exploitation and climate change on the seas and oceans. The worst concentration of cumulative impacts of climate change with existing pressures of over-harvest, bottom trawling, invasive species , coastal development and pollution appear to be concentrated in 10-15 per cent of the oceans concurrent with today’s most important fishing grounds says the report.

The WHO 'Guide to Ship Sanitation' is referenced in the International Health Regulations and has become the official global reference on health requirements for ship construction and operation. Its purpose is to standardise the sanitary measures taken in ships, to safeguard the health of travellers and workers and to prevent the spread of infection from one country to another. The guide was first published in 1967 and amended in 1987.

IUCN, WWF and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have developed this guidebook to assist marine protected area (MPA) managers in assessing the performance of their MPA. Based on this assessment, it shows how necessary changes can be made to improve management measures. It presents a flexible approach that can be used in many types of MPA and offers a variety of specific biological, socio-economic and governance indicators to measure the effectiveness of management actions in achieving MPA goals and objectives.

It is designed as an informative learning tool for decision-makers and technical practitioners. The Compendium covers 9 topics selected by the multistakeholder Dams and Development Forum. It discusses the state of the art regarding dealing with the topics around the world. It shows how they are captured by regulatory frameworks and provides a number of examples illustrating how they have been implemented on the ground.

This report was produced in close collaboration with scientists and experts under HERMES (Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas), a large, interdisciplinary deep-sea research project supported by the European Commissio's Framework Six Programme. The aim of HERMES is to understand better the biodiversity, structure, function and dynamics of ecosystems along Europe's deep-ocean margin, in order that appropriate and sustainable management strategies can be developed based on scientific knowledge. The reliability of water supply in the Caribbean varies between islands, but it is consistently the poor who receive the worst service. The problem is compounded by widespread soil erosion throughout the Caribbean, which has major impacts on the quality of water supply and watershed fertility.

Transboundary waters connect populations of different countries. They are a major source of income for millions of people and create hydrological, social and economic interdependencies. This is the first ever in-depth report produced on Transboundary Rivers, lakes and ground-waters in the UNECE region. It aims to inform, guide and stimulate further action by Governments, river basin organizations, international organizations and relevant non-governmental organizations to improve the status of transboundary waters.

Payments for watershed services compensate land users and owners for the services that they can provide. New York City is assisting farmers to change their landuse and by doing so has avoided the cost of constructing a massive water purification plant. Implementing similar changes in developing countries is extremely challenging. 'Shed Loads - paying to protect watersheds' looks at the potential and problems for watershed services in Africa, Asia and The Americas.

The H2O scenarios offer three stories about the role of business in relation to the growing issue of water in the world. These stories do not try to cover everything but attempt to bring to life a limited number of alternative future environments that will challenge our economic viability, social legitimacy, and global fitness in the marketplace.
