Numerous scientific studies show that biodiversity in Europe has been declining rapidly for some time and that this pattern has been matched by the great periods of expansion and intensification of land use. This first assessment of the Red List status of Europe’s and the European Union’s mammals shows us that 15% of our species are threatened with extinction, it shows that 27% were identified as declining and another 33% had an unknown population trend. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level – in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status.

Although there remain serious gaps in knowledge, there has been an increased understanding of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) since the panzootic started in late 2003, and experience with various control approaches has allowed refinement of strategies at the global, regional and national levels. The revised global strategy presented here is based on the experience and lessons learned from the involvement of FAO and OIE in the global control of H5N1 HPAI over the last three years.

Over the last four years, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses of the H5N1 subtype have spread from Asia to Europe , the Middle East and Africa , causing severe disease in poultry and humans. It provides advice to enable farmers to minimise the risk from mould contamination whilst the crop is growing, during harvest and through storage.

Domestic animal diversity is being lost at an alarming rate. Worldwide, local livestock breed are being crossed or replaced with higher-yielding animals. In collaboration with livestock communities, research centres, universities, governmental and non-governmental organizations, FAO identified and documented 13 case studies, presented in this publication, on how communities manage their local animal genetic resources.
