This publication can introduce but a fraction of the energy and results inspired by the Campaign. It is intended to convey the range of partners moved to action: from children to giant corporations, from womens groups to technocrats, dancers to diplomats, farmers to national governments. Trees are more significant than many of us might imagine. They commemorate births and lives lived. They beautify slums, farms and grand avenues. They provide shade, oxygen, and delight. They cool the Earth.

This study looks at two issues: ecological services valuation - assessing the economic value of the direct and indirect ecosystem services provided by two sanctuaries in Cambodia, and the potential costs/benefits of allowing continuing land conversion and illegal logging; and protected area financing - assessing the costs of maintaining management activities and recommendations for generating funds.

The fourth report in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) series from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) provides a comprehensive, scientifically credible, policy-relevant and up-to-date assessment of, and outlook for, the state of the global environment. GEO-4 is published 20 years after the landmark World Commission on Sustainable Development report - Our Common Future.

UNEP, with the support of the UK Government, is following up a key recommendation of the UN Marrakech Process meeting in Costa Rica (2005) to develop International Guideli nes for Developing, Implementing and Monitoring National Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). The Guidelines are informed by earlier work to develop national action plans on SCP in Asia (UNEP 2005). Experts from the project's advisory group have also provided significant inputs.

The Yearbook is subject–oriented and divided into six parts covering political and security questions; human rights issues; economic and social questions; legal questions; institutional, administrative and budgetary questions; and intergovernmental organizations related to the Untied Nations.

Environmental protection is one of the areas where the Balkan countries still face a big challenge to catch up with their western neighbours. After the 1990s conflicts and the breakup of Yugoslavia, six new Balkan states emerged. Apart from integrating environmental concerns into the new policies, a major challenge is environmental management across new borders. What used to be six international river basins in the Balkans have now evolved into 13 internationally shared river basins and four transboundary lake basins.

The CITES Handbook has been compiled to provide to the Parties to CITES and the wider CITES community the most essential texts for the implementation of the Convention in one single reference publication. It comprises the text of the Convention, Appendices I, II and III, the standard CITES permit/certificate, the Resolutions and the Decisions of the Conference of the Parties to CITES in effect after the 14th meeting (The Hague, 2007).
