This publication presents the findings and results of the 'International Workshop on Flash Floods and Sustainable Development in the Himalayas' organised by ICIMOD, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Lhasa, PR China, in October 2005, with support from the Government of Norway and the USAID Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).

The Himalayan honeybees play an important role in mountain livelihoods and cultures as well as a critical role in pollination. But they are little understood elements of mountain biodiversity, and there is little concrete information available about indigenous species in the wild. This publication presents the results of a detailed study of the Himalayan cliff bee (Apis laboriosa) and the honey hunter communities associated with it in the high mountain areas of Kaski district in central Nepal.

This publication focuses on the issue of food security in the Tibet Autonomous Region. It includes a general introduction to Tibet, a description of the local population’s current access to food; an identification of the different food production systems currently in use; discussions of changes in food production and demand; an evaluation of the potential to increase the productivity of various food-production systems; and finally a set of policy recommendations to ensure the future food security of the country.

Readers will appreciate the difficulties of translating a thoroughly participatory process like that involved in training people in and making them aware of gender in development organisations and their work: how to be aware of its implications for the self? how to be aware of its implications for others? and, above all, how to integrate it into an organisation and into the field in as non-threatening manner as possible?

The productivity of many fruit and vegetable cash crops in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region appears to be worsening – despite increases in inputs. The root cause seems to be lack of pollination, a factor rarely considered by farmers or extension workers. This book presents the findings of a survey carried out in Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, to assess the problem of declining productivity, factors responsible for inadequate pollination, farmers’ management approaches, and ways of tackling the problem, using apples as an example.
