In 1994 UNEP/GRID and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) initiated a joint project on the use of Geographic Information System in agricultural research. Designed to support the CGIAR centres in developing the GIS capacities, the project aimed to promote the interaction and efficient transfer of GIS technology and the applications between the CG and UNEP centres and clients. One of the results of this project was the publication of this report.

The report presents a series of easily-understandable and illustrated examples of successful GIS applications in sustainable agriculture that demonstrate their utility in meeting the information needs of management.
