This report presents the findings of a study that aimed to examine the relationship between the location of rural poor population and land use quality in West Africa based on "best available" data using Geographic Information Systems technology. Following a WRI model using Human Development Index (HDI) indicators to represent poverty the study identified levels of poverty in terms of the following surrogate Health and Demographic Survey variables: child mortality, adult female literacy, primary school enrolment, and children with stunted growth.

The report includes a map for each indicator for human development representing an approximation of poverty by thematic class, a set corresponding graphs that shows the correlation between the HDI indicators and the background data, and a general interpretation of the results. This report was prepared by GRID-Arendal for the Secretariat of the Technical Advisory Committee for the CGIAR, FAO, Rome.
