This directory on Hazardous Industrial Waste Management is a joint project of UNEP's global environmental information exchange network, INFOTERRA, and the Industry and Environment centre, UNEP IE, in Paris.
Information on the management of hazardous wastes is now found in many specialized sources, reflecting the diverse political, technical, legal and ecological issues that surround this controversial subject. National decisions must be based on sound advice, drawn from practical experience as well as based on up to date science. A comprehensive guide to information sources can assist decision-makers and their advisers by identifying others with expertise in this area, and locating key knowledge that is already available.
The purpose of this directory is therefore to:
- direct users to sources of information and expertise on wastes and their treatment.
- provide a select bibliography on key aspects of the topic.
With such a diverse and important subject, it has not been possible to be exhaustive. This Directory contains a selection of the most important sources and references, grouped according to the key management elements that need to be addressed in practical situations. The choice has been made to assist practical decision-making rather than to enter in detail into research or development fields, important though these are in the long term.
It must be recognized in any case that technologies and regulations are evolving rapidly, and additional information will certainly become available in the years ahead. Readers are encouraged to keep abreast of this subject by regular consultation of the key references and institutions listed in the annexes in order to be able to locate up-to-date information at any time in the future.
