This report deals with the technological requirements to achieve the ecological sustainability of two lakes in Java, Indonesia. Lake Rawa Danau is an area under protection, it lies in a caldera that was drained by removing the rim to increase the amount of land for rice production in 1825.
However, due to the existing pressures for water from industry, it has been recommended that a small dam be constructed to restore water levels, which, it is hoped will also protect the remaining swamp forest on the island. Rawa Pening, a small natural lake prior to 1921, is now a big lake with a dam on the Tuntang River. However, owing to poor or non-existent management of the lake, pollution is rising and water hyacinth is taking over leading to the de-oxygenation at the bottom of the water body. This publication gives a diagnosis of both lakes and offers solutions on how to recuperate and manage the lakes in future. |
