Rural, Urban development This paper describes the interactions between the city of Aba, in southeast Nigeria, and five rural settlements. The paper examines agricultural production in the rural areas, with particular attention to access to land and markets. It then explores patterns of income diversification in the area and migration trends, the significance of remittances and exchanges in the settlements’ economy, and the role of migrant networks and associations as civil society actors. Particular attention is given to differences between households (on the basis of wealth and migrant status) and to intra-household relations based on gender and generation. |
