Assistance given to forestry as Official Development Assistance (ODA) is often problematic. It is well known that commitment and ownership in developing countries are needed in order to achieve succes. The lessons learnt from past projects are seldom applied and funding agencies need to change their approach. This study argues the best way to overcome current problems is to support developing countries' own strategies for overall development or in a selected sector.
