The manual grew out of a successful UNEP effort to promote cleaner production in the Asian pulp and paper industry (the NIEM project), which was supported financially by the Swedish Government. Because the manual is also applicable to other regions, UNEP has published it for worldwide use.
UNEP has released a new training resource manual as part of its ongoing series of publications that are designed to help institutes and individuals to organize teaching courses and workshops around the theme of cleaner and safer industrial production. This manual aims to improve environmental management in the pulp and paper industry. It complements the extensive technical information already published by UNEP by providing trainers with ready-made teaching package that can either be used "as is", or as framework for adding local case studies, problems and work exercises. Some technical tables and charts may also assist consultants in undertaking diagnostic work in pulp and paper mills. The manual is structured around separate sections that include: background information; guidance to trainers; case studies, work exercises for study groups; references and contact points. An extensive set of originals for transparencies helps users to give seminar presentations, and there is extensive advice on how to organize a workshop.
