This report is an important tool to enhance the understanding of indigenous methods of assessing and monitoring range resources in East Africa.
It summarizes the results of a study conducted on the traditional ecological knowledge of several pastoral communities in East Africa, such as the Il Chamus and West Pokots of Kenya, the Teso and Bahima of Uganda and the Maasai of Tanzania. Local knowledge on the prediction of drought and climate change, and techniques of monitoring animal health, performance and breeding etc. are drawn from several indicators including changes in vegetation, animal biology, astrology and animal migratory patterns. |
