This report is based on surveys by UNEP teams in the field working with other UN agencies, governments and non governmental organizations in the effected Tsunami regions. It looks at how the regions affected are rebuilding and how future tragedy can be avoided by adequate planning.

This report confirms for the first time that depleted uranium (DU) from weapons used in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1994 and 1995 has contaminated local supplies of drinking water at one site, and can still be found in dust particles suspended in the air. The UNEP team who collated the information included representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

This document provides an introduction to the workshop topics, a report of these two workshops, and some resources for further information. It has been published with the kind support of US-EPA. Our goal with this publication is to bring the overall issues, and the specific discussions and outcomes of both workshops to a broader audience.

The aim of this desk study was to outline the state of the environment and identify major areas of environmental damage requiring urgent attention.

The main objective of the TRM is to enable trainers, particularly, in developing countries and ClTs to develop and produce site and situation specific training courses for the different target groups who are concerned with EIA. The use of the TRM will contribute directly to the building of local capacity to develop EIA procedures and legislation, to conduct EIA, administer, monitor and evaluate the implementation of EIA.
