This is a summary of UNEP's activities in 2006

Violence against women is a pandemic, one that transcends the bounds of geography, race, culture, class and religion. It touches virtually every community, in virtually every corner of the globe. Too often sanctified by custom and reinforced by institutions, it thrives on widespread impunity for perpetrators in what remains a patriarchal world that is reluctant to grant women equal rights and protection from gender-based violence.

This review documents how community conservation can contribute to human well-being and the preservation of natural resources in southern Africa. Additional examples and experience are drawn from India, South East Asia and Central America. The report provides eight recommendations to further advance community conservation processes

This international compendium of national demographic statistics is designed to supply basic statistical data on 230 countries or areas for such users as demographers, economists, public-health workers and sociologists. The Demographic Yearbook 2006 is the fifty-eighth in a series published by the United Nations. It contains general tables including a world summary of selected demographic statistics, statistics on the size, distribution and trends in national population, natality, foetal, infant, maternal and general mortality as well as nuptiality and divorce.

Half the world's people live in urban areas, and roughly a third of these live in desperate poverty without access to basic amenities. Taking on the themes of the UN-HABITAT's Water and Sanitation in the Worlds Cities (2003), this new volume focuses on the deficiences in the provision of water and sanitation where most of the population of the developing world live : in towns and small cities.

This study looks at the many forest-based associations in Guayana that are attempting to use forest-based products and services, and are concerned about sustainability.

Effective data analysis requires familiarity with basic concepts and an ability to use a set of standard tools, as well as creativity and imagination.
