The WHO 'Guide to Ship Sanitation' is referenced in the International Health Regulations and has become the official global reference on health requirements for ship construction and operation. Its purpose is to standardise the sanitary measures taken in ships, to safeguard the health of travellers and workers and to prevent the spread of infection from one country to another. The guide was first published in 1967 and amended in 1987.

The third edition of the International Medical Guide for Ships shows designated first-aid providers how to diagnose, treat, and prevent the health problems of seafarers on board ship.

These recommendations have been developed in the light of technical progress, the advent of new substances and materials, the new experiences of modern transport systems and above all, the requirement to ensure the safety of people, property and the environment.
