This CD-ROM contains the electronic version of the FAO Species Identification Sheets for Fishery Purposes for the Eastern Central Atlantic (Fishing Areas 34 and part of 47) published in 7 volumes in 1981. The Identification Sheets are aimed at establishing an annotated illustrated inventory of aquatic species of interest to fisheries; they cover the species of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Eastern Central Atlantic.

For years, the impoverishment of artisanal fishery in the Mediterranean countries has been frequently reported at all levels when the urgency for intervention was systematically highlighted. In addition, it has also bee reiterated that, at present, there is not enough knowledge either of the primary or secondary magnitudes of artisanal fishery or of the normative and managerial tools that cover the entire spectrum of competence.

This volume contains background documents and papers presented at the FAO-WARDA Workshop on Integrated Irrigation Aquaculture (IIA) held in Bamako, Mali, from 4 to 7 November 2003, as well as the findings of FAO expert missions on IIA in the West Africa region. The rationale for IIA development lies in its potential to increase productivity of scarce freshwater resources for improved livelihoods and to reduce pressure on natural resources, which is particularly important in the drought-prone countries of West Africa where water scarcity, food security and environmental degradation are priority issues for policy makers.

Introduced species, also known as alien or exotic species, are a proven means to increase production and value from aquatic ecosystems. They are also recognized as a significant threat to aquatic biodiversity. Resource managers, the fishery and aquaculture sectors and policy-makers must balance the benefits versus the risks of using introduced species; accurate information is essential. This CD-ROM contains a variety of information, including guidelines, codes of practice, international instruments, publications and considerations that will facilitate responsible use and control of introduces species.

Fish roe products have historically been seen as expensive and highly-desirable luxury food items. The best and most expensive is true caviar, which uses eggs from sturgeons caught in the Caspian Sea. In recent years, eggs from many other fish species have been used to develop products imitating original caviar. By utilizing processes appropriate for each kind of fish, it is now possible to make a similar - but nevertheless imitation - product.

The workshop stressed that the concept of reference points (RPs) needs to be closely connected to the management objective of concerned fisheries, taking into account various parameters such as maximum sustainable yield, economic and social benchmark and environment concern. Participants stressed the need to define different RPs for each dimension of management or to identify a single RP aimed at ensuring the sustainability of the system, thereby no longer limited to biological aspects.

Traduire les objectifs d'orientation de haut niveau en objectifs opérationnels et en actions est à présent le grand défi pour garantir la durabilité de la pêche. La présente brochure fournit une vue d'ensemble de l'approche écosystémique des pêches, appliquées aux pêches de captures marines, et de ses avantages ; examine les éléments nécessaires pour mettre en oeuvre une telle approche ; passe en revue l'éventail des mesures de gestion disponibles ; présente une vue d'ensemble du processus de gestion ; décrit les éventuels besoins restant à couvrir en matière de recherche ; et recense les principales menaces à la mise en oeuvre de l'approche écosystémique des pêches.

This document gives an overview of the discussions on the concept of Operational Units which was first conceived in 2000 and its development to date. The approach of categorizing fishing fleets into homogenous groups, or Operational Units, to implement effort control fisheries management, as requested by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, has been evaluated by a good number of workshops, meetings and pilot studies, the conclusions of which are summarized in this document.

El PAI-INDNR es un instrumento voluntario que se aplica a todos los Estados y entidades y a todos los pescadores. Tras la introducción del PAI, se exponen la naturaleza y el alcance de la pesca INDNR. Seguidamente se describen el objetivo y los principios del PAI, así como las medidas que han de aplicarse para prevenir, desalentar y eliminar la pesca INDNR. Estas medidas se refieren a las responsabilidades de todos los Estados, las responsabilidades de los Estados del pabellón, las medidas relativas a los Estados ribereños, las medidas relativas al estado rector del puerto, las medidas comerciales convenidas internacionalmente, la investigación y las organizaciones regionales de ordenación pesquera.
