Ce document s’appuie sur une etude conduite en association avec le projet de recherche interdisciplinaire intitulée <>. Ce dossier décrit une étude portant sur le Bassin du lac Manyara, situé dans le nord-ouest de la Tanzanie. L’étude couvre les zones nord et centre de cette région et se penche plus en détail sur huit villages et leurs paysages. Il identifie les processus sociaux, économiques et politiques d’importance qui se sont produits au cours des 100 dernières années environ, afin d’apprehender le rapport entre pratiques d’occupation foncière et évolution de l’environnement. Elle avotre les incidences des resultats historaique, socio-economiques et environnementaux de la recherche, en vue d’interpreter les changements survenus dans le Bassin du lac Manyara et de compare ces resultats aux idees recues ou dominates en matiere d’evoution de l’environnement. Le document met l’accent sur le fait que ces techniques sont applicable a l’etude de l’evolution de l’environnement dans d’autres contextes africains.

This paper describes the water and sanitation programmes that the NGO Development Workshop has developed in Luanda over the last 15 years, working with community organisations, local government, and the official water and sanitation agencies.

This paper emphasises the important role that local institutions can have in reducing poverty in urban areas – a role that is often forgotten by international agencies. It highlights the many possible entry points for reducing urban poverty (including some for which little or no external funding is needed) and the many kinds of local organisations or institutions that can contribute to this.

Many of the more progressive recent developments in animal health have been focused around participatory epidemiology. For many, livestock is a source of food and income generation, and problems surrounding lack of access to veterinary services, drugs, and information can severely impact upon the quality of the animal healthcare available.

Partnerships for development are spreading like wildfire – in rhetoric if not in reality. This report examines a set of partnerships in forestry – those between companies and communities – to see whether there is any substance beyond the hype. Some 57 examples in 23 countries are reviewed – from informal arrangements and social responsibility efforts to outgrower schemes and joint ventures.
