The publication of "Natural Allies" is extremely timely. Engagement between UNEP and civil society is necessary, both for UNEP and for the protection of the planet's fragile web of life. In this engagement lies the potential for resurgence of democracy and ecological awareness, the processes that were interrupted over the past decade by the euphoria that all decisions can be left to the market and deregulated global commerce can take care of the planet's health.

The 2003 United Nations List of Protected Areas presents data on 102,102 protected areas covering 18.8 million km squared. Within this total figure, there are 69,066 protected areas with IUCN categories. In addition, there are 4,633 internationally designed sites.

This book contains timeless photograph images that illustrate the issues that will define the 21st century. The effect of this book is unlike any statement yet made about the environment by governments, NGOs, UN organisations or journalists. Anger, sorrow, joy, despair, and more surprisingly, humour triggered these unique photographs.
