Based on his Review of Small Cetaceans first published online in 2001, Boris M. Culik describes in this encyclopaedia all 72 toothed whale species (odontocetes), from the smallest, the Gulf of California vaquita to the largest, the giganti sperm whale. This book presents the most recent scientific findings on the distribution, migration, behaviour and threats related to all odontocetes. Up-to-date maps provided by the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group show the currently known distribution of each species. Colour illustrations by Maurizio Würtz, Genoa University and Artescienza, Italy, provide a realistic view of these marine mammals and nicely complement the book. 

Jointly commissioned by WWF and UNEP, this paper — Sustainability criteria for fisheries subsidies: Options for the WTO and beyond —  provides an analysis of the fisheries conditions and management practices that could guide both WTO negotiators and domestic policymakers in designing criteria for the use of subsidies.

Seamounts, deep-sea corals and fisheries - an ubiquitous ocean floor feature, a key marine ecosystem, and an important human activity: together they have created one of the most critical ocean issues. The report reveals the global scale of the vulnerability of habitat-forming stony corals on seamounts, and that of associated marine biodiversity and assemblages, to the impacts of trawling, especially in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

This project draws on the experience and lessons learned from a first UNEP Senegal Country Study on " Integrated Assessment of Trade Liberalization & Trade-Related Polices : A Country Study on Fiesheries Sector in Senegal ".

The Argentine and Senegalese studies presented in this report were conducted within the framework of two broader UNEP Country Projects that involved the collaboration of a number of individuals and organizations. Each of these projects aimed to assess the environmental and related social and economic effects of trade lineralization and trade-related policies, as well as to develop policy response packages that contribute to mitigating the negative impacts and enhancing the positive impacts identified through the assessments.
