This report presents the assessment of Lakes Turkana, Tanganyika, Victoria and Malawi – the largest of the East African Rift Valley Lakes and among the oldest lakes in the world.

This report presents the assessment of the GIWA Eastern Equatorial Pacific region, which includes parts of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia.

In this study the vulnerability of water resources to environmental change is assessed on a river/lake/groundwater basin scale for the Southern, Eastern, Western & Northern African Regions.

Groundwater pollution is a serious problem throughout the African continent. While this is not surprising, very little attention has been paid to the problem. Information on this threat to Africa's future is therefore not readily available.

In Africa, most rivers, freshwater lakes, and aquifers are shared by two or more countries. The diversity of politial, social, and economic structures and organizations among African countries and the varied temporal preciptation and distribution of water on the continent make hydropolitical setting very complex and prone to vulnerability.

This report is based on surveys by UNEP teams in the field working with other UN agencies, governments and non governmental organizations in the effected Tsunami regions. It looks at how the regions affected are rebuilding and how future tragedy can be avoided by adequate planning.

This report builds largely on the need to engage with the financial sector in dealing with water related challenges, by providing a basic set of risk drivers linked to water scarcity, which can serve as a platform for identifying potential investment opportunities for mitigation, contributing to water sustainablilty.
